We all dread allergy season and your doggo is no different, but managing allergies in dogs can be extra challenging, but recent studies have shown that homeopathic supplements may offer relief without the side effects of some conventional medications. Approximately 30% of dogs in the U.S. suffer from allergies, with many symptoms stemming from environmental triggers, foods, or flea bites.

To help alleviate these symptoms naturally, here are five supplements that research indicates may benefit dogs with allergies:

Quercetin

Often called “nature’s Benadryl,” quercetin is a natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound found in fruits and vegetables like apples and berries. Studies suggest it can help reduce the histamine response in dogs, easing allergy symptoms like itching and inflammation. Research has shown quercetin to be effective in lowering oxidative stress and reducing inflammation, making it a popular choice for pets with seasonal allergies. A number of our puppops recipes, like SQUIRREL! and Red Fish, Blue Fish, incorporate this powerful antioxidant to help relieve your doggo’s allergies and reduce inflammation.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Known for their anti-inflammatory properties, omega-3s can help manage itchy, irritated skin associated with allergies. Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), improve skin health and reduce inflammatory responses in dogs with allergies. These essential fatty acids are commonly sourced from fish oil or flaxseed and can be especially helpful in reducing symptoms of atopic dermatitis, a common type of allergy in dogs. Many of our puppops recipes are high in omegas, but if you want a big time omega boost to help with skin issues we’d recommend our One Fish, Two Fish pops.

Bromelain and Papain

These digestive enzymes, derived from pineapples and papayas, can support immune function and enhance nutrient absorption. Bromelain, in particular, has been shown to act as a natural antihistamine, helping to reduce inflammation and swelling in allergic reactions. When combined with quercetin, bromelain may improve its absorption, making it a powerful duo for allergy relief in dogs. Pineapple powder, high in bromelain, is a key ingredient in our Busy Bee pops for allergy relief.

Probiotics

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that support gut health, which in turn can improve immune response. Research indicates that probiotics help balance the gut microbiome, potentially alleviating skin and food allergies. By enhancing immune health, probiotics can help dogs’ bodies better tolerate allergens without an exaggerated response. These benefits have made probiotics increasingly popular among pet owners looking to manage chronic allergy symptoms naturally. If your pup has a sensitive stomach or stinky toots, our limited ingredient recipe Tum-Tum is packed we pre- and probiotics to improve gut health and overall wellness.

Bee Pollen

Feeding local raw honey to dogs is a traditional remedy supported by anecdotal evidence, and some studies suggest it may help pets adapt to local environmental allergens. Raw honey contains trace amounts of pollen, which can potentially help build tolerance to allergens over time. While more rigorous studies are needed to confirm these effects fully, many veterinarians believe it can be a useful addition to a holistic allergy-management plan for pets who suffer from environmental allergies. That’s why we’ve added a healthy dash of bee pollen to every Busy Bee puppop.

As always please consult with your veterinarian before introducing any new supplement, especially if your dog has other health conditions or is currently on medication.
